News Stories

For many Monterey Institute students, the short winter term in January is a great opportunity to gain real-world experience and a deeper understanding of a particular subject, and/or to enhance their language skills. The courses and immersive learning opportunities offered for the 2013 winter (or “J-term”) are a wonderful reflection of the vibrant academic environment created by the unique Monterey Institute community.

Among the practica offered is the ever popular “Chile Practicum: Transitional Injustice and Chile’s Vulnerable Populations” led by Professor Jan Black with Judge Juan Guzman, best known as Chile’s prosecutor of General Pinochet. Students could also choose to participate in real-life development projects as part of the well-established Team Peru or Team El Salvador programs. This January, Professor Pushpa Iyer will lead students through an exploration of the cultural, social and political history of Gujarat in “India Tour: Journey through Gandhi’s Land.” More information about these and other practica is available on the Winter and Spring Practica page.

For those students who want to use the winter break for study without leaving Monterey there are plenty of exciting options as well. MiddCORE, an innovative winter term program at Middlebury, is coming to Monterey for the first time in January 2013. This intensively interactive mentor-driven and highly competitive program focuses on developing new solutions to wicked social problems.

The Development Project Management Institute, perhaps better known as DPMI, is an intense training program for aspiring development professionals offered in Monterey in January, and again in the summer in Monterey and Washington D.C.

Inspiring and leading change is the theme at the week-long Ocean Leadership Practicum offered in collaboration with the MARINE, the Monterey Area Research Institution’s Network for Education. The Institute‘s participation in MARINE is managed through our Center for the Blue Economy.
