Program: Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL)

Fast Fact: Sarah has taught English to diverse populations including child refugees in New York, college bound teens in California, and continuing education adults in India.
“For me, teaching is really all about leading each individual student toward self-empowerment and self-discovery.”
Sarah has had a life-long interest in intercultural communication, diplomacy, and immigration. It wasn’t until college, when she had the opportunity to work as an ESL teaching assistant for the U.S. Literacy Corps, that she discovered her passion for education.
“My experiences helping child refugees acclimate to American society, and improve their English skills, led me to my true calling in life. Through this experience, I realized that my passion was to work in the educational arena.”
“I was attracted to the small class sizes and also heard about the extensive and supportive MIIS alum network all around the world.”
Most of all, Sarah says she enjoyed the camaraderie that is fostered and developed in the TESOL program. She also really enjoyed how intensive the program is.
“After graduating, I felt more than prepared to apply all of the theory, knowledge, and skills to real world situations. I graduated from MIIS feeling proud of all I had accomplished and confident entering the professional realm.”
Following graduation, Sarah worked in India conducting a series of teacher training workshops. The workshops were designed to introduce new pedagogical approaches, techniques, and tools to English teachers. Sarah is now working as an English language trainer at Sankalchand K. Patel Vidhyadham College in rural India, where she designs and implements innovative content-based curriculum.
