Program: Joint MPA/International Education Management

Specialization: Education and cross-cultural communications

Undergrad: Columbia College Chicago (Marketing)

Fast Fact: Karla has traveled, volunteered and worked in 20 different countries.

“I truly believe the biggest way I can make a difference in this world is through educating communities.”

After graduating from college with a degree in marketing, Karla set off around the world backpacking and volunteering throughout the Pacific Islands and Asia.  Volunteering in Siem Reap, Cambodia and in Kolkata, India as well as serving in AmeriCorps VISTA influenced her life direction and ultimately led her to the Monterey Institute.

Karla first came to the Monterey Institute for a campus visit and knew right away that she liked the vibe and the culture that MIIS has to offer.  She says she chose to pursue her master’s degree at MIIS for multiple reasons.

“I like that the school is small and specialized to my interests and has a diverse student population.  I also really like their involvement with the Peace Corps Master’s International Program as well as the scholarships I received - including my AmeriCorps scholarship.”

What Karla enjoys most about her program is the hands on approach and opportunities to get involved on and off campus.  Karla is pursuing a joint degree in public administration and international education management.  So naturally, her focus is on education and cross-cultural communications.

“Education has continually proven to be one of the best indicators of quality of life and productivity of a country. Through my studies and field work experience, the importance of education has become clear and I truly believe the biggest way I can make a difference in this world is through educational development.”
