Dynamic Student Life at MIIS Reflected in Variety of Student Clubs

The Monterey Institute campus was buzzing from the enthusiasm expressed by students presenting their student clubs at the annual Student Club Fair on Thursday.  An impressive lineup of 37 groups met with other students to introduce their club, or in some cases to get support for new ideas.

Many of the clubs are well-established and connected to different fields of study such as the International Trade Club, the Net Impact MIIS chapter, the Conflict Resolution Association and the Terrorism Studies Club.  One popular club that has been run for many years is B.U.I.L.D. (Beyond Yourself in Language Development), a club that brings together future language teachers and students and people from the larger Monterey community who are eager to learn a new language in an informal setting. Our Green Thumb is another club that provides a learning experience through its member-tended garden “working classroom” and offering a number of activities aimed to share and increase knowledge of community gardening.

There is no limit to the ideas that students have for forming new clubs, but to gain support from the Student Council they actually have to have a following.  Among new club ideas is a club devoted to Middle Eastern culture and language, a German Club, Africa Nation, a club for people interested in fine dining, and another for Frisbee enthusiasts.
