Yinghua has a bachelor’s degree in translation and interpretation, and gained valuable hands-on experience while in Shanghai, China.
She shares, “I regard myself as an excellent language learner. Almost all of my friends agree that I am a good listener, who is patient and responsive. I even taught my Mom how to type in Pinyin when I was in elementary school. Somehow, I think I have what is required of an ideal language teacher. To better prepare myself to be a language professional, I decided to pursue a master's degree in TESOL.”
When Yinghua received her acceptance to the Monterey Institute, she also had offers from the University of Pennsylvania and Boston University.
Yinghua says, “I still chose MIIS to pursue my TESOL degree mainly because I knew that I would be the only Chinese student in my class in fall 2011. It feels good to be somewhat unique. More importantly, I didn’t want to give up translation and interpretation. I was interested in taking or at least auditing some translation and interpretation classes to hone my skills, which I did in my first semester.”
Yinghua really enjoys the professors in the TESOL program.
“My professors are the best!!! Supportive and dedicated. Although their teaching styles are different in one way or another, they all have a great sense of humor. They provide thought-provoking feedback to my schoolwork and are always ready to help whenever I have questions.“
Yinghua is specializing in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL). She explains, “Not necessarily tech-savvy, I am still fascinated by how technology can help people learn languages. Someday, I would love to establish my own language school, which will offer customized online courses, incorporate corpus use into teaching, and introduce social media to get learners exposed to authentic language use.”
