The challenge asked students to develop and implement a plan for lowering the environmental impact of their campuses and to educate and engage on-campus facilities managers and fellow students.
Members of the Net Impact team worked with facilities director Jon Garner and the The Institute Sustainability Council to develop a plan to permanently remove 350 light bulbs in over-lit areas on campus and replace 24 T8 bulbs with new LED T8 bulbs, which are 80% more energy efficient. Additionally, the plan made all the faucets on campus low-flow.
As a result of the light bulb replacements, the Institute will save an estimated 39,783 kWh per year (that’s over 8,000 kilograms of CO2). This amounts to an annual savings of $5,730 and a 3% reduction of the Institute’s total energy usage from the previous year. Also, the new faucets are saving the campus 1,000 gallons of water every day.
The Institute Net Impact team beat out 26 other chapters from around the country to win the competition and received $1,000 for additional energy efficiency upgrades on campus. The Institute's goal is to be carbon neutral by 2016.
