"I genuinely want to be a part of something that is much bigger than myself."
Laura Henson thinks that for a curious person like herself, the sea is a dreamworld.
"I find the ocean fascinating for its grandness and mysteries," she said.
So it's no surprise that Laura is drawn to marine policy. She believes that the management of our oceans and their resources is one of the most important issues of our time.
"What we decide to do with this vast resource in the next century will determine whether or not it remains a resource for generations to come," she said.
As a Center for the Blue Economy Fellow this summer, Laura is working with UNESCO on an international marine law issue in southern Africa. She will have the chance utilize both of her languages (Spanish and Portuguese) and use the knowledge she acquired in her International Marine Law course.
"This particular internship will be the perfect challenge for me," she said. "I hope it will take me to a new level in terms of perspective and problem solving skills that I will bring to the field upon graduation."
