Professor Peter Shaw, winner of the 2012 Leslie Eliason Excellence in Teaching Award
May 14, 2012
The recipient of the seventh annual Leslie Eliason Excellence in Teaching Award is Professor Peter Shaw, a longtime faculty member in the Institute’s Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program. In the May 10 announcement, Provost Amy Sands noted Professor Shaw’s record of excellence in teaching and his ongoing, inspiring commitment to providing Monterey Institute students the highest quality education possible. “He has worked with countless students to ensure their success in both their academic and career objectives, and dedicated himself to building a strong community of excellence at MIIS.”
The award is dedicated to the memory of Professor Leslie Eliason, who is recognized and remembered for her commitment to quality teaching and to her students. Students, faculty and staff submit nominations and a special selection committee of three faculty members, three students and one staff member makes the final selection.
“This year we had an impressive pool of nominations which made selecting only one faculty member difficult,” noted Provost Sands. The Committee also selected Professor Anna Vassilieva as the first recipient of a new Honorable Mention Award. “We felt it was important to acknowledge her achievements, commitment to MIIS and its students, and her outstanding efforts as a teacher.” Professor Vassilieva will receive a Certificate for Outstanding and Dedicated Teaching as well as a small cash award in recognition of her efforts.
Congratulations to Professor Shaw, who will also serve as the speaker at winter commencement this year. His selection will be celebrated on campus at an award ceremony in early September, once the new school year has started.

Peter is indeed an excellent professor, mentor, and example, which I follow in my teaching and language program administration. I am happy to see that Peter is the recipient of a well-deserved honor.
