MIIS Ranks Third in Nation for Peace Corps Master’s International Participation

The Peace Corps and the Monterey Institute of International Studies announced today that the Monterey graduate school now ranks in a tie for third in the nation in terms of participation in the Peace Corps Master’s International program, with 26 students enrolled in the program and serving overseas as of the ranking date of September 30, 2011.
Students in PCMI programs complete several semesters of academic work toward their master’s degree before serving a 27-month Peace Corps term of service. Upon their return from Peace Corps service, most students must complete a final semester of academic work to earn their master’s degrees from the Monterey Institute. PCMI students receive both academic credit and special scholarship support for the program. PCMI students at the Monterey Institute can earn master’s degrees in four programs: teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), international business (MBA), public administration (MPA), and international environmental policy (IEP).
The top five graduate schools in this year’s Peace Corps Master’s International rankings were Michigan Technological University (31), Tulane University (27), the Monterey Institute (26), University of Washington (26), and the University of South Florida (22).
“Peace Corps volunteers and returned Peace Corps volunteers can benefit greatly from the Master’s International and Coverdell Fellows programs,” said Peace Corps Director Aaron Williams, the Institute’s May 2011 commencement speaker. “By pursuing master’s degrees before and after Peace Corps service, volunteers are able to advance their careers and help the communities where they serve. Volunteers return to the United States after Peace Corps service as global citizens and are highly sought out by our university partners because they are able to share knowledge from their service with students and faculty members.”
