The Excutive Education program at the Monterey Institute recently hosted a 2-day innovative course on Harnessing the Power of Social Media, Youth Movements and Dynamic Markets.

The course was taught by renowned author and activist, Reza Aslan and Kiva co-founder Jessica Jackley. They focused on social media and how to use it to successfully promote an organization or cause.

"What happens in the virtual communities of social media is that everything is accelerated," said Aslan. "Good news spreads like wildfire. Bad news can destroy you almost instantly. So you have to be very careful about maintaining a real sort of sense of loyalty to your mission and to your brand."

"Everybody has such an incredible opportunity and an equal opportunity to get out there and have their voice heard and to create positive change in the world," said Jackley.

The students and leaders in attendance say they gained invaluable knowledge from this course.

"I've had a whole transformation as to the importance of social media," said Monterey Institute student and course participant Kat Harrison. "[I understand the importance of] learning and being a master of those tools and just utilizing those to make a difference in the world."
