Continuing to meet the global demand for multilingual, culturally adept professionals, the Monterey Institute of International Studies today announced the launch of its twelfth graduate degree program, the Master of Arts in International Education Management (MAIEM) program.
The three-semester, 42-credit program will offer students a fast track to key positions in a variety of international education programs around the world. The MAIEM program will prepare professionals to run study abroad programs, provide student services in intensive language programs, manage international student services offices, develop international professional training programs, and work for government agencies and exchange programs (e.g. Fulbright, Education USA, and their foreign equivalents). The program will enroll its first students in fall 2012.
“The program is designed to offer a significant career boost to college graduates who are interested in the international education field, but are looking to progress quickly beyond entry-level positions such as study abroad advisor and international student advisor,” said Program Chair Katherine Punteney. “They may have had a couple of years of international education work or other international experience, but most will not have previous formal academic training in international education or business.”
The program is a natural outgrowth of the Monterey Institute’s 2010 integration as a graduate school of Middlebury College, which also operates the C.V. Starr-Middlebury Schools Abroad programs at 38 sites in 16 countries. Graduates of the MAIEM program will be highly qualified to serve, for example, in professional positions at the Middlebury Schools Abroad.
“The international education field is full of opportunity for people with strong language and intercultural skills,” commented President Sunder Ramaswamy. “We see the new MAIEM program as offering these students a competitive advantage by drawing on the Institute’s core strengths in areas such as international business, public administration and language education.”
A 2011 study sponsored by the Institute for International Education and the American Institute for Foreign Study Foundation reported that more than 3.3 million students are now enrolled in studies in higher education institutions outside their home country for a year or longer. From 2000 to 2007, the figure increased by 85 percent, and from 2007 to 2010, despite the worldwide economic crisis, there was a 10.7 percent increase. This growth in student mobility is supported by a large industry of government and institutional employees working in marketing, advising, visa support, travel services, educational programming, housing services, co-curricular programming, program management and more. The U.S. is the most popular destination worldwide with almost 19 percent of the 3.3 million students cited above opting to come to the U.S. to study.
