MIIS Student Alexandra Shaphren Named “Outstanding Philanthropic Young Adult” of the Year
November 21, 2011
Monterey Institute student Alexandra Shaphren (MPA ’12) was recognized as the “Outstanding Philanthropic Young Adult” of the year at the Central Coast’s 20th Annual Philanthropy Day Award ceremony on November 18 in Carmel. Shaphren was honored for her fundraising efforts for the Community Partnership for Youth (CPY) by collecting pledges and running the Lake Tahoe 50 Mile Ultra-Marathon in September (where she finished first among women!). Through her efforts, she raised close to $1,300 for CPY, an organization dedicated to helping underserved kids stay away from drugs and violence and find a path to a healthy and full life.
Alexandra or Alex, as she is known by her friends, is a wonderful role model. Alex says the honor is “both humbling and inspiring.” She adds that “listening to the many amazing stories of giving” has encouraged her to pursue her passion for working with underserved communities and low-income families. “I hope to continue to learn from my peers here at MIIS and the hard-working people of the Monterey area.”
