Monterey Institute students, faculty and staff embrace every opportunity to engage with the local community and introduce them to the fascinating world that is to be found in our campus community. For four years the Institute has invited local high school students to participate in a series of workshops in connection with International Education Week.
This year 86 students from four local high schools -- Monterey High School, Carmel High School, North Salinas High School and Seaside High School -- along with teachers and chaperones were welcomed to the MIIS campus for a day dedicated to international education. The visiting students participated in four workshops introducing them to various languages, interesting cultural presentations on subjects such as dating rituals in South Korea and street games in Iraq, different study abroad opportunities and discussions with international students about their high school experiences.
An event like this would not be possible without the dedication of close to 80 MIIS student volunteers and enthusiastic staff and faculty. Megan Joyce of the Office of Student Services, the primary event organizer, says it was a wonderful experience working with this group and very rewarding to see how much the high school students enjoyed the day’s events. She adds that this is a “great way for the Monterey Institute campus community to reach out and connect with local youth.”
