10/8 Paul Theroux to Headline a MIIS Celebration of 50th Anniversary of the Peace Corps
September 30, 2011
Join us for a day of celebration on Saturday, October 8 with the renowned author and travel writer Paul Theroux and including panel discussions, movie showings and a “Bazaar” themed reception displaying the MIIS/Peace Corps experience in all its wonderful colors and flavors.
All of the symposium sessions are open to the public, and are free with the exception of the Theroux lecture and reception, which require a ticket purchase for admission ($20 for the general public; $10 for MIIS students), with all proceeds benefiting the Institute’s Peace Corps Scholarship Fund. Theroux—himself a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer—will deliver the keynote address on “The Humility of Travel” at 4:30 p.m., with a reception and international bazaar following.
Sessions at the symposium, begin at 10:00 a.m. and run through 7:00 p.m., will include:
- Screening of American Idealist: The Story of Sargent Shriver
- Welcome session with MIIS President Sunder Ramaswamy, Congressman Sam Farr (a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer) and Dr. Peter Grothe
- Panel discussion on Peace Corps trailblazers, featuring Howard Anderson. David Elliott and Laurence P. Horan
- Panel discussion on the Peace Corps’s impact on careers, featuring Peter Laugharn, Maureen Orth and Priscilla Wrubel.
With 16 participants currently in service, the Monterey Institute ranks fourth in the nation for the number of students participating in a PCMI program. At any given time, approximately 10 faculty and staff and as many as 40 to 50 students on campus at MIIS are Returned Peace Corps Volunteers.
All sessions of this event will take place in the McCone Building at 499 Pierce Street in downtown Monterey, primarily in the Irvine Auditorium. See the full schedule and more information.
