For more than fifty years the Monterey Institute has offered summer intensive language instruction ranging from elementary to advanced level. This summer around 150 students are enrolled in the MIIS Summer Intensive Language Program (SILP) studying six different languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish in an intensive eight-week program. The program pushes students to strongly improve their language skills over the summer digesting three semesters worth of material with their full-time language focus.

All of the classes emphasize language acquisition in a cultural context and have strong focus on communication. In addition to in-class instruction students are assigned special tutors and can participate in a variety of cultural activities and field trips. Japanese students traveled to Santa Cruz on June 18th to take part in a Japanese cultural festival and just a few days earlier Chinese students walked to the beach where they roasted marshmallows on a bonfire, enjoyed yummy s’mores and played games to get to know each other outside the classroom setting. To keep up with what is going on in classrooms and beyond this summer visit the SILP blog.
