Experts from the Monterey Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) were featured on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition and also in the National Journal within the last few days.
Morning Edition interviewed CNS Deputy Director Leonard Spector regarding the unfolding story of international efforts to condemn activities at Syria’s nuclear reactor. The piece speculates that heightened interest in the nuclear reactor may reflect an international strategy to pressure Syria into halting its current violent crackdown on internal dissent.
A June 3 National Journal article (“European Union to Tackle Middle East WMD Issue at July Meeting”) quotes both CNS Director William Potter and Deputy Director Patricia Lewis on the political dynamics of, and prospects for progress at, upcoming EU discussions on weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the Middle East. Lewis describes the reluctance of Middle Eastern government to engage on the issue as a result of so-called "sophisticated cynicism," the view that achieving agreement on eliminating WMD from the Middle East is “so unlikely as to make even working on the issue appear naïve.”
