To date the fundraising efforts of Monterey Institute student, staff, and faculty volunteers for earthquake and tsunami relief in Japan have raised approximately $7,200, with additional activities set for this week and next week. This total does not include proceeds from the MIIS Follies, held April 1. Moreover, the volunteers have found a partner in the Miner Foundation, which has pledged to match dollar for dollar all donations raised by the MIIS community going forward. All donations will go to Give2Asia, as recommended by the Japan Society of Northern California, and will be distributed to organizations in Japan working on the ground.

Leaders of the MIIS community fundraising effort have announced a panel presentation on “Japan: Coping with the Earthquake, Tsunami, and Nuclear Disaster” from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 21 in the Irvine Auditorium (499 Pierce Street). Participants will include Professor Tsuneo Akaha (Monterey Institute); Steven Leeper (chairperson, Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation); Nils G. Bildt (MIIS alumnus and president, CTSS Group), and others. A final program will be announced later on this site.

In addition, student, staff, and faculty volunteers will once again host a table at the weekly Farmers’ Market on Alvarado Street on April 5, from 4:00-7:00 pm. Please stop by and contribute or help in other ways. Donations may be made in cash or check. If you need a receipt for tax purposes, please donate in check form; your check should be made out to Give2Asia and should note that it is for JSNC Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. You can also send a check to Professor Akaha, who is coordinating the fundraising effort, at: Graduate School of International Policy and Management, Monterey Institute of International Studies, 460 Pierce Street, Monterey, CA 93940.
