Monterey Institute President Sunder Ramaswamy received the 2011 Education Award from the Monterey County Business Council at its 15th Annual Gala and Economic Vitality Awards on Saturday, February 5, at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey.

The Monterey County Business Council (MCBC) is “an alliance of business executives and professionals providing collaborative leadership to help people from business, government, education, and the community work together on countywide issues reflecting our organization’s strong commitment to the environment, economic vitality, and quality of life.” The MCBC issues an annual Monterey County Economic Report and sponsors a variety of local economic development initiatives and activities.

Six other distinguished individuals and companies were given awards for their significant contributions to specific economic sectors in the Monterey Bay area: Rocket Farm – Agriculture; Dr. Marcia McNutt – Research; Myron “Doc” Etienne – Arts; Granite Rock –Building; Harry Weis – Health/Wellness; and the Pebble Beach Company –Tourism.

Sunder Ramaswamy became the 13th president of the Monterey Institute of International Studies in January 2009. Over the past two years he has led a major academic reorganization, overseen the launch of a very successful new degree program in nonproliferation and terrorism studies, and navigated the Institute through its successful transition to become a graduate school of Middlebury College.
