Avner Cohen, author of two books on Israeli nuclear policy and a senior fellow at the Monterey Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, was quoted in a January 15 New York Times piece that explored Israel’s possible role in delaying Iran’s progress toward developing a nuclear weapon. The article, titled “Israeli Test on Worm Called Crucial in Iran Nuclear Delay,” describes a clandestine program of what might be characterized as industrial espionage. It describes a speculated-upon but not officially confirmed effort to infect the computers used to control sensitive equipment at the center of Iran’s nuclear program with a worm that would cause the equipment to damage itself. The article was subsequently referenced and/or reprinted by media outlets from India to the UK, and led to a follow-up interview with Cohen on Iranian.com.
