Winter Commencement at the Monterey Institute of International Studies was held at the historic Golden State Theater on Saturday, December 11th. Friends and family of the 102 graduates from 21 countries celebrated on a gorgeous sunny day in Monterey.
As President Sunder Ramaswamy marked in his address, the ceremony represented “the beginning of something, not the end.” It was a day to celebrate the accomplishments of the graduating students and also an event to usher in the next phase in their lives, a phase in which they will have a chance to apply all that they have learned during their studies at the Monterey Institute and “quite literally ‘be the solution’ to some of the world’s most pressing problems.”
The faculty commencement address was given by Professor Moyara Ruehsen, who gave the graduates good and often entertaining advice about how to live a life without regrets. Student speaker Miriam Rayward spoke of her Palestinian father’s loss of his home and country, and how through hard work and commitment he has risen to the top of his profession. She asked her fellow graduates to grab the opportunities afforded to them through their great education and believe in the power of passion and hard work to make a difference in this world.
A photo montage of the ceremony and reception, set to music, is available on the Monterey Institute YouTube channel.
