Thomas M. Hout, bestselling business author and international competition expert, will deliver a lecture titled “Are We in a Cold War over Economics with China?” on Tuesday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the Irvine Auditorium inside the McCone Building (499 Pierce Street) at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

Mr. Hout has written extensively about the impact of China’s economic rise to the world’s economy. His work has been used in classes at the Monterey Institute, especially the multi-disciplinary “China Factor” class. One of the topics students have been exploring in this class is the development from Made in China to Created in China, the subject of an article Mr. Hout co-wrote for the current issue of the Harvard Business Review. On Tuesday, the China Factor class will be held in the Irvine Auditorium, where students will have the opportunity to listen to and meet with one the authors of some of the studies they have been reading this semester. As one student put it, “Attending the Hout lecture is a perfect ending to this amazing class, and a chance to tie everything we have learned this semester together.”

Mr. Hout, who teaches business strategy and international competition at the University of Hong Kong’s Business School, has been with the Boston Consulting Group for 35 years and co-wrote the bestselling business book Competing Against Time. The lecture is free and open to the public, and a wine and cheese reception will follow.
