On December 1, Belarus announced its commitment to eliminate large stockpiles of highly-enriched Uranium at a meeting of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Kazakhstan. The international news agency Associated Press and national U.S. media such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and Bloomberg looked to the Monterey Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) for information regarding the amount of nuclear materials currently held by Belarus. According to the 2010 estimate made by CNS specialists, Belarus has hundreds of pounds of weapons-grade uranium.
