Dr. William Potter, Director of the Monterey Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, and adjunct professor Gaukhar Mukhazthanova co-authored an op-ed piece (“Nuclear Phobia”) that was published by the International Herald Tribune and reprinted by the New York Times today.
In their essay, Dr. Potter and Professor Mukhazthanova discuss the findings of a multi-year study they conducted that discounts alarmist proclamations by politicians and others about so called “nuclear dominos” falling. According to Potter and Mukhazthanova, forecasts have routinely overestimated the pace of nuclear proliferation. The co-authors argue that while the risk of weapons spread is real and ongoing, evidence does not support the frequent implication in media and political circles that the proverbial proliferation sky is falling.
