The September 9 edition of the Monterey County Weekly featured Monterey Institute professor Kelley Calvert’s article “Gulf Stream: The impacts of BP’s oil spill still linger in the Southeast – and Monterey County” as its cover story. Calvert writes about her recent trip to the Gulf, shares her observations and recounts her conversations with locals. When she returns home to the Monterey Bay Area, another region with a strong and vital relationship to the ocean, she starts thinking about the impact of the spill on the Central Coast. In the article, Calvert quotes Monterey Institute graduates and other people from the Monterey area who are working on the clean-up efforts in the Gulf and talks about how the disaster has reminded Californians of the stakes they have in protecting their marine environment.

Kelley Calvert is assistant professor and director of the Writing Center at the Monterey Institute, and spent last summer on a bio-diesel fueled road trip across the country exploring our dependence on fossil fuels and related issues. She is currently working on her first book, Hope Walks into a Bar Looking for Change, about the three month long journey and her search for hope and change. Along the way she realized that hope does not have to be a noun, and is now advocating for taking hope into your own hands or Hope the Verb.
