The Monterey Institute’s Center for Advising and Career Services (CACS) opened in the summer of 2009 with increased capacity to assist current students as well as alumni. Once you become a student at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, you have in fact signed up for lifelong career services. CACS offers a wide range of services from advising current students on their courses or study paths to helping them get a job or launch a career after graduation.

Since its grand opening last summer CACS has served many alumni, some of whom have taken a long trip back to Monterey for some face to face advising. CACS operates an electronic career service called Zocaló where members can, among other things, search for jobs. CACS Director Tate Miller says the job postings mainly come from three sources: “organizations who know us and seek to employ our students and alumni, services we subscribe to and mine for appropriate listings, and alumni who notify us of job listings that might be of interest to the MIIS community.” These added career services have increased and deepened the Center‘s relationship with MIIS alumni, and their enthusiasm to notify the Center of job listings “has worked magic for us,” adds Tate.

It is estimated that around 2500 people, both current students and alums, use the Zocaló electronic service at least once a month. The newest addition to career services is the offering of professional development workshops online – via ustream. Those workshops are offered free of charge to all students on campus but will now be made available to alums as well.
