On July 13, 2010, The New York Times quotes Miles A. Pomper, Senior Research Associate and nuclear policy expert at the Monterey Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) in Washington DC about rising tensions between the US and South Korea. The article focuses on US opposition to South Korean plans to reprocess used nuclear fuel. Mr. Pomper sets the issue in a wider context and explains how frustrated South Koreans, who consider themselves a loyal US ally, are that the US appears to have more trust in India, a non-NPT member, when it comes to nuclear related issues. The two nations are set to start renegotiating their nuclear treaty which expires in 2014 later this year.
