The Monterey Institute’s fiscal year closes at midnight today. Preliminary figures indicate a 32 percent increase in the number of donors to the Institute for fiscal year 2010 (FY10). Contributions from alumni and friends allow MIIS to provide students with financial aid, support faculty development, and keep the campus up-to-date with new equipment and facilities.

A highlight for FY10 is a large increase in alumni giving, with nearly double the participation of last fiscal year. More than 200 alumni contributed to the Annual Fund. “A little known fact is that contributions from alumni provide more than crucial financial support; other funders like foundations and corporations use alumni giving as a key metric in determining whether to award a grant to the Institute. It’s also a consideration in university rankings like U.S. News and World Report,” explains Leah Gowron (MPA ’97), Director of Alumni Relations.

This year, the Institute was fortunate to have two matching gift campaigns that increased philanthropic interest and support from alumni. First, Institute Trustee David Jones and his wife Betty offered to match gifts for scholarships or annual fund support the Institute up to $500,000. Second, MIIS Trustee Jed A. Smith offered a $25,000 challenge to the Class of 2010 to establish a scholarship fund and to encourage alumni giving at the earliest stage. Jed’s offer to match a gift of $25 or more with $100 inspired more than 30 first-time alumni donors. “It was a no brainer for me to give the $25,” says Student Council President Greg Freeman. “I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to receive a match and support scholarships for future students.”

The Advancement Office hopes to build on the momentum of this year to encourage more support of the Monterey Institute and its stakeholders.

Gifts to the Annual Fund are accepted year round; those made by midnight on June 30 will count for FY10. Visit www.miis.edu/give.
