MIIS Alumnus Co-Authors Asia Times Article on Afghanistan’s Poppy Economy

The Asia Times Online recently published an essay co-authored by Ahmad Waheed (MAIPS ’09) and Matthew C. DuPree addressing the socio-economic ramifications of the recent poppy blight in Afghanistan. DuPree and Waheed, who are both currently research associates with the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, note the effects of the recent poppy blight on the national economy, and the efforts of the Taliban to blame to blight on international forces active in the country. They note the central role heroin poppy cultivation continues to play in the Afghan economy, and argue that the poppy industry will “continue to haunt the international community's efforts in Afghanistan and thwart progress toward a stable and self-sustaining state until the problem is finally recognized as a key source of the current political and economic instability.”
