UN Selects Six MIIS Students for Translation & Interpretation Internships
May 20, 2010
Six graduating translation and interpretation students from the Monterey Institute of International Studies will be part of the first group of summer interns ever selected by the United Nations’ Translation and Interpretation Services. The interns will report to UN Headquarters in New York on July 1 for a two-month intensive training program designed to prepare them to take the UN’s competitive examinations, a requirement for all prospective UN translators and interpreters.
The internship program is a component of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last fall between the UN and the Institute. The MOU, signed during UN Assistant Secretary-General Franz Baumann’s November 12 visit to the Monterey Institute campus, encompasses enhanced cooperation between the two institutions with the goal of enhancing future UN employment opportunities for students in the Institute’s translation and interpretation programs.
The six students selected are Alfonso Ferrer Amich, Sarah Irene, Yun Li, Susan Yanqi Liu, Carmen Villalba Ruiz, and Claudia Tebay.
The Institute’s translation, translation and interpretation, conference interpretation, and translation and localization management degree programs have long been considered leaders in the field internationally. The Institute is one of 12 advanced language schools worldwide with whom the UN has signed similar MOUs, and the only one in North or South America.
