CNS Director Meets With UN Secretary-General to Discuss Nonproliferation Education

Dr. William Potter, founding director of the Monterey Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), yesterday met with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to discuss disarmament and nonproliferation education, a significant point of focus for both the recent Nuclear Security Summit and ongoing Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference. CNS Deputy Director Dr. Patricia Lewis and U.N. High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Sergio Duarte also attended the meeting, held at UN headquarters in New York City. During the meeting, Dr. Potter described the Institute’s new, first-of-its-kind master’s degree in nonproliferation and terrorism studies. The secretary-general was already familiar with the Monterey Institute and CNS, and sought assistance in addressing pressing disarmament and nonproliferation challenges. During the meeting, Dr. Potter also extended an invitation for the secretary-general to visit the Monterey Institute at some point in the future.
