A segment on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition this morning featured comments from Leonard S. Spector, deputy director of the Monterey Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, regarding the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty Review Conference getting underway in New York today. The delegations of 189 signatory nations convened a series of meetings today to assess the treaty and address the dangers posed by states currently believed to be attempting to acquire nuclear weapons capabilities. Spector’s comments focus on the reaction of other NPT signatory nations to the new US-Russian arms agreement and efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “I think most states are going to say the United States has really made some progress,” suggests Spector, adding his hope that this may convince other nations “to stand behind the United States in an effort to reinforce the non-proliferation parts of the treaty."
