Norwegian Foreign Ministry Awards $392,000 to Support CNS Scholar’s Research

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs recently awarded Senior Fellow Ward Wilson of the Monterey Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) a $392,000 grant to support his ground-breaking research and writing on the changing nature of the international debate about nuclear weapons, and emerging notions that they are costly, dangerous, but not very useful.
Wilson is the director of the Rethinking Nuclear Weapons Project at CNS, the world’s largest research center devoted to combating the spread of weapons of mass destruction. The grant will be administered by CNS over the next three years.
In 2008, Wilson won the annual CNS Essay Contest known as the Doreen and Jim McElvany Nonproliferation Challenge and its $10,000 cash prize for the “most outstanding essay on nonproliferation.” His essay was entitled “The Myth of Nuclear Deterrence” and was a fundamental challenge to the theory of nuclear deterrence.
