Ambassador Yukiya Amano, the newly-elected director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, visited the Monterey Institute last week after participating in the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington DC. A former diplomat-in-residence at the Institute’s James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), Director General Amano spoke to a large group of Monterey Institute students on April 16 in a class conducted by Ms. Gaukhar Mukhatzhanova on nuclear proliferation trends and trigger events.

Director General Amano previously served with CNS Founding Director Dr. William Potter on the United Nations Experts Group on Disarmament and Nonproliferation Education. He has long emphasized the vital role of education in promoting disarmament, nonproliferation and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. His visit to the Monterey Institute is highlighted on the IAEA official website as well as on the CNS website.

The nonproliferation education work of Dr. Potter and CNS was also highlighted in an article in this morning’s Monterey County Weekly.
