Talented performers, a gorgeous venue, $5 to get in, and it benefits a great cause – does it get any better than that?

On Friday, April 9 at the Golden State Theatre in Monterey, the Monterey Institute Student Council will proudly present the 41st annual MIIS Follies Talent Show, with proceeds from the $5 admission charge going directly to relief efforts in Haiti.

For Sophie Dessources, MPA student and co-producer of the show, her Haitian roots make this fundraiser especially close to her heart. A large part of her family still lives in Haiti and Sophie says it has been very difficult to watch the humanitarian crisis unfold there after the devastating earthquake in January. But Sophie is also an optimist: “If there is one thing I have learned at MIIS, it is that when competent, innovative people work together to find solutions, good things happen.”

The 41st MIIS Follies will follow in the Monterey Institute tradition of celebrating cultural diversity and differences, with an emphasis on fun and laughter. The Student Council driven event will feature 16 different acts, each no longer than seven minutes. Fellow student and co-producer Christine M. Carlson adds that “having this year’s event be a fundraiser for Haiti is really inspiring students to bring their ‘A’ game to the follies.”

Tickets are being sold at the Café Lumiere at 365 Calle Principal in Monterey, and will also be sold at the Golden State Theater on the evening of the event. All proceeds will be donated to Catholic Relief Services (CRS), an international, non-sectarian, non-governmental organization that is delivering vital humanitarian assistance to the people of Haiti. Two Monterey Institute alumni affiliated with CRS are currently in Haiti assisting with relief efforts.
