TEDxMonterey

On April 16, the Monterey Institute of International Studies will host TEDxMonterey, a conference featuring more than a dozen notable presenters addressing the central theme of “Be the Solution.” The conference will run from 1:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a reception to follow, in the Irvine Auditorium in the McCone Building at 499 Pierce Street in Monterey.

Confirmed presenters for TEDxMonterey include Dr. Kateri Carmola, the C. A. Johnson Fellow in Political Philosophy at Middlebury College; Laura Lee Lienk, a science and environmental/watershed education specialist with California State University, Monterey Bay and the Watershed Institute; David Merrill, co-founder and president of Sifteo; Seth Raphael, a.k.a. “Magic Seth”, a technology magician with a bachelor’s degree in Magic and Technology from Hampshire College and a master’s in Wonder from MIT; Dr. Ramon Resa, a former child farm worker who grew up to become a pediatrician; Jose Soto, a community youth organizer dedicated to counteracting the gang violence that killed his son; Spector Dance Company, a dance group that performs digital multimedia works that celebrate the local community; and more.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TEDlike experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

TEDxMonterey is open to the public; tickets are $30 for general admission and $20 for students.
