The Monterey Institute of International Studies has signed on as a founding sponsor of the 1st North American Summit on Interpreting, an innovative conference that will for the first time bring together professionals in the fields of community, conference, legal, medical, military, and signed language interpreting to meet, learn, and network with one another. The inaugural conference is scheduled for June 17, 2010 in Arlington, VA, just outside of Washington, D.C.
The demand for and use of professional interpreters has expanded exponentially over the past decade, yet the profession remains fragmented, with no single body or organization promoting the field as a whole. The summit is being convened by a new organization established in an effort to address that leadership vacuum -- InterpretAmerica, LLC, co-founded by Monterey Institute Professor of Conference Interpretation Barry Slaughter Olsen and Katharine Allen, former president of the California Healthcare Interpreting Association.
