I just happened rather late to see this very sad notice on the MIIS Facebook page. Peter was certainly the most memorable of my professors at MIIS, which is saying something, because all of them were great and very memorable. I took Peter's Cross Cultural Communications class and used what I learned over the next 25 years of my career in the Foreign Service (Department of State) and in my current position as the Director of the Unitarian Unilateralist United Nations Office. He opened us up to different cultures. He taught us to ask questions and listen more and pontificate less. He had international students comment on American culture, which taught us more about their culture than ours. The Japanese felt we were very familiar and the Latin Americans felt we were too reserved. The tools I learned in his amazing class, I took with me to Somalia, Greece, Zambia, India, Pakistan, Sudan, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire, The Gambia and those were just the countries where I lived and worked. I traveled and spent considerable time in about 50 more countries. Everywhere I went, I remembered Peter's words and the experiences in his class. I remember them still here at the United Nations. It's sad that his wisdom can no longer be shared with his students at MIIS. It is up to those of us who studied under him to carry on that hope for a better more inquiring world.
