April 22, 2015

It could be argued that every day is Earth Day at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, where students grow their own produce on campus, compost their food scraps, and work hard to develop innovative solutions to some of the most pressing environmental and developmental issues of our time. Even so, every year students and faculty from the International Environmental Policy program get together to plan a whole week of activities to celebrate our planet in connection with Earth Day, April 22nd.

On the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, it was fitting that the schedule for Earth Week at MIIS was particularly impressive. Events have ranged from a vegan cook-off in the Our Green Thumb organic garden to movie screenings, taking a journey to the financial frontlines of climate change, exploring the connection between surfing and environmental ethics, to spirited debates about who is to blame for the lack of progress on climate change and how to eat with intention. The week will end with a celebration of the beautiful nature we are surrounded with here in Monterey, an open group bike ride from the MIIS community garden to Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove.
