The MIIS Experience in 60 Seconds

May 28, 2014

Thomas Gray is a former submarine Navy officer who is now pursuing a degree in Nonproliferation and Terrorism Studies at MIIS.

In this 60 second snapshot of his experience at MIIS, he talks about a transformative class he is taking—simulating negotiation for the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons or NPT, which he describes as a "Model UN for nonproliferation issues." The students negotiate a nuclear nonproliferation treaty as though they are actual ambassadors to that treaty, in some cases with actual country representatives. Often students from this class are invited to participate in actual negotiations, in some cases as active members of national delegations.

"The MIIS Experience in 60 Seconds" features a different student each week from a range of degree programs offered at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. In these short videos, the students elaborate on topics such as why they chose to come to MIIS, what has surprised them about the Monterey Institute, what kinds of cool things they've been involved in—both on and off campus, and more.
